So this was my first ever audiobook. It was kind of an experiment for me. I wanted to see if I would be able to listen to a book while playing World of Warcraft because I hadn’t played in a long time and wanted to, but felt guilty when playing because I wasn’t reading. Yeah, I’m weird like that. Well, I can confirm that I can indeed listen to books and pay attention while playing games. Which is good for me because I now have an audible account so I can get a book each month to listen to!I really enjoyed listening to Hex Hall. It’s one of those books that I’ve been meaning to read but just never got around to it, well finally I was able to. I’m a big fan of young adult novels. I know, shame on me for reading about teenagers while being an adult but hey, I’m reading and loving it, so why not. Besides, I don’t have tons of time to spend reading the somewhat lengthy adult novels all the time. They take me longer, especially now that I’m a mom and my reading time is almost non-existent some days. So it’s even better having someone else read to me.So Hex Hall is about Sophie, a girl who’s a witch and just can’t stop using her powers and getting into trouble. So she and her mom move around a lot. Well eventually, enough is enough and she is sent to Hecate Hall, which is a reform school for Prodigium (supernaturals). So she gets there and learns that she is apparently a dark witch and the other dark witches want her to join their coven but she decides she doesn’t like them and says no (Go Sophie!). There is of course a boy who she can’t stand and is therefore crushing on him because he’s the hottest guy on campus, Archer Cross. But Archer is not all he seems and I’m not sure if I like him any more or not. I feel like there might be a chance for redemption for him, I’ll have to remain undecided for now though.I really like Sophie’s character because she’s not afraid to doom herself by befriending the underdog. She couldn’t care less about popularity. She ends up being room mates with the most hated girl on campus, who is also the only vampire, but thinks she’s cool. Although she could do with a little less pink sometimes. She really tries to hate Archer, but can’t help but fall for his charm. She isn’t very good at doing magic yet, although she is trying to learn and has special lessons from a ghost that only she can see. She is a flawed character and has many revelations throughout the book that she manages to handle alright, after initial freak outs. Nonetheless a character that I enjoyed.I thought that the narrator, Cris Dukehart did a lovely job. I was never bored and tuning out while listening to her. She gave the characters life and really made the book enjoyable. I think this is a good thing for an audiobook, although I am an audiobook noob so I don’t really have much to compare it to.Overall this is a great listen. The story is great and the writing is great. I’m looking forward to continuing on with this series!
